The platforms you already use weren't built for you — they extract your work and call it exposure. Capital Music Network is a creator-owned ecosystem — streaming, live events, original programming, and artist services — built so artists are finally treated like professionals, and listeners become the reason an artist can keep making music.
Explore What We're Building
CMN On Demand exists because the platforms artists already use don't pay them fairly or tell them who's actually listening — and because listeners deserve more say in who their money supports. For artists, that means keeping your masters, staying non-exclusive, and getting paid directly by the people who value your music. For listeners, it means an ad-free catalog, no algorithm deciding what you hear, and a subscription that goes straight to an artist you choose — not a black box. One platform, built to strengthen that connection on both sides.
Catalog expanding — new artists added regularly.
For Artists
Your music, your name, your career — finally yours. When a listener subscribes and designates you, 90% of their $40 goes directly to you. No stream counts. No black-box royalties. Non-exclusive — keep your music everywhere and add CMN as a direct revenue channel. You keep your masters and your data.
For Listeners
You're not a subscriber — you're a patron. $40 a year, full access to the CMN On Demand catalog, and 90% of your payment goes straight to the artist you choose to back. No algorithms deciding what you hear. No ads. No monthly billing surprises. Just music, and a direct line between you and the artist your support keeps working.
In an age where music feels limitless and free, the artists making it are still bound by an industry built to extract value from their work without compensating them for it. Creators Jam Live exists to push back on that — and for the audience, it's a front-row seat: come discover DMV artists before anyone else knows their name, and watch a song get built live instead of just hearing the finished version.
Creators Jam Live began in 2021 on the rooftop of the Eaton Hotel — an open, informal space for DC artists to create together in front of a live audience. After a hiatus, Michael returned to Eaton as an artist-in-residence, and in collaboration with Program Director Pete Danielski and visual artist Khadija Jahmila, staged Free Music: The Illusion of Liberation — an exhibition naming the unseen labor and financial constraints most listeners never see, and framing the whole thing not just as critique, but as a reclamation of artistic autonomy. The companion recording was later named an Honorable Mention on CapitalBop's list of the best D.C. jazz albums of 2025.
From there, Creators Jam Live came back with a new format and a sharper purpose. This isn't a showcase where artists perform for other artists — it's built for artist development. The jam session, The Write Off songwriting contest, and the live visual art all exist to help artists sharpen their craft in front of a real audience, not just their peers, and build the kind of fan base that sticks — people who connect with the artist specifically, not just the moment. That's what turns a room into a following, and a following into a career.
A booking shouldn't cost an artist their independence. Capital Music Network connects outside promoters, venues, and event organizers with artists affiliated with our platform. These artists are fully independent — not signed to CMN, not exclusive to us. Our role is to make the introduction and coordinate the booking; the artist always takes the lion's share of what's paid for their performance.
Hear what actually goes into the music you stream — the decisions, the setbacks, the craft nobody sees on the record. Inside the Craft is our YouTube series — real conversations with artists and industry insiders about the craft, the business, and everything in between. One part of that series is our ongoing collaboration with Howard University's Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, where our current season was recorded. Now streaming: legendary producer Mark Batson in six episodes recorded live at Childers Hall.
Capital Music Network is a program of Distrik Kollective Entertainment Inc. (DKE) — a Washington, DC 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2021 by bassist Michael Bowie. It started the way most of DKE's work starts: from the inside, from a musician who'd lived the problem CMN now exists to solve — artists doing the work and not owning the outcome.
Since then, DKE has grown from a single rooftop jam session into a full ecosystem: Creators Jam Live, a monthly artist development series; CMN On Demand, a creator-owned streaming platform; Inside the Craft, an original conversation series; and Capital Music Network itself, tying it all together. A fiscal sponsorship program — giving affiliated artists the infrastructure to receive grant funding for their own projects — is in development and will be offered in a future phase.
600+ DMV artists engaged. Funded twice by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Partners and collaborators include Howard University's Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, Eaton House DC, Atlas Performing Arts Center, and the Mid Atlantic Jazz Festival. Current event sponsors include Chuck Levin's Washington Music Center and Rocklands BBQ — with more in development.
